The Area

Safety

The main Corio campus is set on a massive, secure 245-hectare private estate along Corio Bay, located about 75km southwest of Melbourne. The self-contained campus provides a highly safe environment with round-the-clock security and resident house faculty living in every dormitory to ensure student safety.

Weather

Geelong experiences a temperate oceanic climate with four distinct seasons, opposite to the Northern Hemisphere. Summers (December–February) are warm and dry with daytime highs of 25–30°C (77–86°F), requiring strong UV protection. Autumn (March–May) is mild and pleasant. Winters (June–August) are cool, with daily highs of 10–15°C (50–59°F) and chilly nights, though snow is extremely rare on the main campus. The Timbertop campus in the mountains, however, does experience cold winter conditions and snow. Spring (September–November) is mild and comfortable.

Accessibility

The nearest domestic airport is Avalon Airport (AVV), about 15–20 minutes away by car. For international flights, most students travel via Melbourne Tullamarine Airport (MEL), which is approximately a 50 to 60-minute drive from the Corio campus. Japan Airlines (JAL) and Qantas operate direct flights between Tokyo (Narita/Haneda) and Melbourne (about 10 hours), making access from Japan relatively smooth. The school organizes direct airport bus shuttles for boarding students during major term breaks.

Food

On-campus dining halls provide three nutritious meals daily, including salad bars, hot entrees, and dietary-specific options. In downtown Geelong and along the waterfront, about 10–15 minutes away by car, students can explore modern Australian cafes, Italian bistros, and a diverse range of Asian restaurants, including Japanese, Chinese, and Thai cuisines, on weekend outings.

Culture

Geelong Grammar blends traditional Australian heritage with a globally inclusive culture. The community places a strong value on kindness, personal integrity, and support for one another, with teachers and housemates offering close, attentive care to international students. Participation in traditional Australian sports such as Australian Rules Football (AFL), cricket, rowing, and equestrian is also very active.

Tips for Japanese Students

First-hand advice from Japanese students on finding food and everyday essentials.

Grocery

Daily necessities and groceries can be easily purchased at nearby shopping hubs such as Corio Shopping Centre (5–10 minutes away), which houses major Australian supermarkets (Coles, Woolworths, Aldi) and discount department stores (Kmart, Target). Japanese foods and Asian groceries are available at Asian specialty stores in downtown Geelong or at larger Japanese grocery stores in central Melbourne (such as Hinoki Japanese Pantry). Students often order specialty Asian snacks and condiments online or stock up during trips to Melbourne on weekends.

Getting There

Access from Japan

Direct flights are available from Tokyo (Haneda or Narita) to Melbourne Airport (MEL) via Japan Airlines (JAL) or Qantas, with a flight time of roughly 10 hours. From Melbourne Airport, the Corio campus is approximately a 50 to 60-minute drive via the Princes Freeway. Geelong Grammar operates dedicated airport shuttle buses for boarding students at the beginning and end of each school term, so international students can travel with peace of mind.

What to bring

  • Laptop
  • Passport
  • Admission letter
  • Plug adapter
  • UV protection

Australia’s UV index is exceptionally high, so high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-protective sunglasses are essential year-round.

  • Winter & outdoor gear

Winters in coastal Victoria are cold and windy, requiring warm coats and thermals. Year 9 students at Timbertop also need specialized outdoor gear (waterproof hiking boots, heavy-duty rain jackets, thermal layers) per the school’s packing list.

  • Plug adapters & transformer

Australia uses Type I electrical outlets (230V, 50Hz). Bring plug adapters (and a transformer if needed) from Japan for your personal devices.

  • Japanese food & essentials

Bringing preferred Japanese snacks, seasonings, personal skincare products, and familiar stationery will help make dorm life more comfortable.
